Positive race debut for Cairoli in Mantova
In the third and final round of the Internazionali d'Italia MX EICMA Series 2020 Tony Cairoli made today his seasonal racing debut.
On the sandy track the nine-time World Champion, in agreement with the KTM Red Bull Factory Racing team has decided to make an important test before the first Grand Prix of the year in Great Britain on March the 1st. Still far from the best physical condition and after a seven-month stop from the last GP, raced in June 2019 in Kegums, Latvia, Cairoli managed to take back home two podiums, playing two careful but profitable heats. Qualified with the sixth place in the morning timed practice, Tony went well out of the gate at the start of the first moto, giving then the lead of the race at the first corner to Tim Gajser (Honda HRC), but finding a good rhythm from the first lap and ending the MX1 heat in second place. The start in the Super Campione, a race in which the best twenty MX2 and MX1 rider race together in the last heat of the day, was also good and at the end of sixteen laps Cairoli crosses the finish line with his KTM 450 SX-F in third place, with a safe and smooth race. Next race for the Sicilian rider is scheduled in three weeks, on the track of Matterley Basin for the first round of the 2020 MXGP .
Tony Cairoli: "It was the first race of the season, I'm not yet in a good
shape and we knew it wasn't going to be easy and we didn't expect much, but getting on the podium in both races was positive. We needed to take this race almost as a test, also to better understand what to improve and in which sectors to work. If I had been in better condition I would have raced all three rounds of the Internazionali d'Italia, in front of my crowds, but it was not possible; however, it was important to race before the first Grand Prix and we come out with good indications."
MX1: 1-T.Gajser 2-A.Cairoli 3-I.Monticelli 4-M.Evans 5-A.Forato
Supercampione: 1-M.Evans 2-T.Gajser 3-A.Cairoli 4-I.Monticelli 5-A.Lupino
Next Grand Prix: 01/03/2020 Matterley Basin (GB)
